I'm on pain meds and thus watching a lot of "quality" television today, and one of the shows I just watched on TLC - "I'm pregnant and homeless" - really pissed me off just now.

The show profiled a lady who:

a) is married to someone who spent 4 years in prison;
b) ended up living in a tent in the woods (!) with said Model Husband of hers after her husband lost his job;
c) is 37 weeks pregnant on top of all of this... AND LIVING IN A TENT IN THE WOODS;
d) refuses to move back in with her parents after they became homeless because her parents don't like her husband (BIIIIIG surprise!) and wouldn't let him stay there with her;
e) kept repeating how scared she was that if they were still homeless when she went into labor, Social Services would take the newborn instead of letting them take him, you know, BACK TO THE WOODS.

So, Snark, tell me this:

1. On a scale of 1 to Phenomenally Stupid and Unfit for Parental Rights, how stupid do you think this person is?
2. If choosing between living with a convicted felon in the woods and living with your parents while 37 weeks pregnant, which would you choose?
3. Perhaps the only "serious" question in this lineup - would you ever marry (and then procreate with) a convicted felon?

I can sympathise.

I mean yes, it's a shitty situation, and she's not making the best of choices, but people are like that all the time, all over the world.

I can imagine that she has some issues (maybe stemming from her relationship with her parents, her upbringing, maybe related to the quality of life in her hometown and what is 'normal' there..., level of education...), and that despite her husband's shortcomings, she sees herself as totally in love with him and can't help but love him/can't bring herself to leave him for his crimes.  And feels its her duty as a devoted wife to stay with him, even if it means forsaking a more comfortable existence with her parents (who she possibly has a bad relationship with because REGARDLESS of how much they hate her husband, I think they should be shacking them both up if there's no other way around it.)

And of course she loves her baby and doesn't want to lose it, even if to our eyes, she's in the worst possible situation to raise a child.

I'm guessing she's too in love with him to do the sensible thing, like crazy abused wives/girlfriends. Still, being a parent is about making sacrifices, and if she's not willing to sacrifice living with this dude for this kid she's not exactly starting off well.

Stupid muppet.

Re: procreating with someone who has a conviction... depends what they'd done wrong. Still, I'm guessing 4 years means it was probably something fairly serious.

Why would you suggest someone NEEDS to watch Jeremy Kyle, Lil?! INSANITY!

I'm with Jem on it depending what the felony was. I would marry a pirate, but I wouldn't marry a murderer.

If she wasn't pregnant, for all that I care, she could live with a serial killer in a cave.

However, now that she's responsible for another human being she should learn to make sacrifices and better decisions. Not necessarily, to go back and live with her parents. Find a shelter? Go to some friends? Find a social apartment? As all of you said, she seems to be blinded by this guy - but the fact that he allows them to be living in such conditions proves that he wont be a great father.

As for his crimes - well ... it depends - do you know what was it and what were the circumstances? For all I know, he could have killed someone in defence.

She sounds like one of those women that are so "in love" with their boyfriend/husband that they put them before their own child. Sickening.

I'm with Jem on it depending what the felony was. I would marry a pirate, but I wouldn't marry a murderer.

... or a sexual convict.

Perhaps she is afraid of moving back in with her parents because they are bound to scowl her for all her irresponsible choices, and it's easier to run away from that, than to face it head on.
I'm sure that she realizes that living in a tent whilst being pregnant isn't the smartest thing she could have possible done, but if she feels like she has no other choice... then my guess is that she feels she is trying her hardest to provide a -fairly- secure spot for herself and her baby.. I mean, it's better than sleeping under today's newspaper in the park.

Nevertheless, I think her parents need to seek out professional help to force her to come back. She's a danger to her own health, and to that of her unborn child. And as she's clearly not able to make the rational choice, I think her parents should do it. Not so much for her, but for her baby.

Did the program give any details as to why her husband lost his job? Did it have anything to do with him having been convicted?

Hi.

Convicted felon? What was the conviction for? 4 years? Doesn't mean jack.  In third year law, I worked on a case prosecuting a man who sexually molested a girl for 8 years.

He pleaded guilty, thus the girl did not have to testify and as an act of leniency (shown by the court) he only got 15 months (in which, he would later be released after 8 months)

After that case, I told law school to shove it up their arses whilst I began to find a real job.

That's a whole different story, anyway.

Back on topic.  The girl - she's stupid and in love. And, did I mention she is stupid? I don't understand how anyone...any god given one could possibly put their baby's life at risk....clearly stupid.

Many thanks.

I would have 'introduced myself', but I'm not one for the internet spotlight.  I'll just make my comments as I read through.
