I've had my iPhone 3G for almost 2.5 years now and honestly, I will not be getting the iPhone 4. Yes the phone is great but you know what: it's not the best thing on the market anymore. There are other Android phones that put the iPhone 4 to shame. I'm looking at getting a Galaxy S (it has specific names on various networks) phone that's running Android and eventually 2.2 on it. SUPER AMOLED screen, 720p recording.. perfect. I can root it as well. Sure I've spent $80 on apps over the years but I don't want to be on that iPhone bandwagon any longer. Not only that but the whole issue with the hardware reception issue has been a huge turnoff.

I've had an iPhone 3G for just over a year, and whilst its definitely been the best phone I have ever had, I cannot wait to upgrade to the iPhone 4.
For me, the only reasons to upgrade is its quicker, and I can finally have the decent camera I have been desperate for since my LG phone.
Alas.. I will have to wait until May next year to upgrade. Even then I might not be able to afford it, or they might bring out another one around then.
Yes, it's definitely much quicker than the 3G. The difference was pretty obvious when I loaded my apps. The quality of the camera is so much better, and there's the added bonus of the video that the 3G didn't have. They come out with a new iPhone every summer, but after releasing a new model, the following year is just a few upgrades to the previous. So you might as well wait a few months more, as they'll probably release an iPhone 4 with a couple more features or upgrades.
