A lot of companies, during the build and launch process use usability testing to pin-point any usability flaws in their user interfaces.

Personally I have never seen this done, or done some myself. Personally, the only testing I have done on the web applications I have worked on is through using 'Personas'.

Rather than paying the money to watch people use your application and get results, you put your acting head on and think as if you are the user and see what can be improved to make things easier. The results perhaps aren't as accurate as those you would get from proper usability testing, but better than none.

What experiences have you had with usability testing, if at all? What applications to you use?

I have to test my own stuff at work but don't see the point. When you're developing the same stuff day in, day out, you know it intimately. You become blind to its flaws.

I like the idea of these websites that have been springing up where 5 random people tell you what they remember for your site, or describe pages, attempt to get somewhere specific. Usability testing on the cheap!

^ And, the more important question is, can you sign up to be a tester, and if so, do you get paid for it? Tongue
